Science Week 2015

 Last week children at Gayhurst embraced Science Week, carrying out different science experiments within their phases. Some of the experiments  included creating lava lamps, using invisible ink, melting chocolate, floating boats, and experimenting with clouds in a jar, just to name a few. The children  thoroughly enjoyed getting involved and found out lots about the science behind the various experiments. “I loved learning about carbon dioxide in fizzy  water, the raisins were great!” Gus 1H. RR were really amazed by the different  experiments they took part in. ‘Science is awesome’ they said.

The whole school participated in creating a scale to go on a giant inflatable reptile which was  showcased at the Science Fair at the end of the week. This is what it looked like when it all came together!

3M were lucky enough to receive a workshop delivered by Rachel (parent of Eva 3M), in which they looked at different types of cells. They went on to design, decorate and create 3D inflatable cells. ‘We learnt that there are red blood cells and that white blood cells help your body to fight against disease and  infections.’ Rowan 3M

When it couldn’t get any more exciting, reptiles and a few furry animals dropped in for some workshops. Some of the animals the children got to meet included a Bosc  Monitor, a Boa Constrictor, a  Bearded Dragon, Russian Rabbit and a Chile Rose Spider. They found out about their eating habits, the habitats they live in, other              interesting facts and any questions the children had about the animals were also answered. Some classes have gone on to learn about these animals further  during their Literacy lessons this week and create  information texts. The  week ended with a Science Fair, which was a huge success again this year. Thank you to                       everyone who attended and  supported the event.
